As a parent or caregiver, the early months with your baby are filled with countless firsts—some exciting, some nerve-wracking, and most of them a mix of both. Just when you start to find your rhythm with feeding, whether it's breastmilk, formula, or a combination, you start hearing about starting solids. Suddenly, you're wondering: Is my baby ready? What do I feed them? How do I even begin?
You’re not alone. This transition is a big one, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little expert guidance, you’ll feel confident and excited about this next stage of your baby’s journey!
Why Solids Matter
During your baby’s first year, breastmilk or formula remains their main source of nutrition. Solids, especially in the beginning, are all about exploration, not perfection or full meals.
Here’s what solids do offer:
- Exposure to new textures, tastes, and smells.
- Development of oral motor skills (chewing, swallowing, and tongue movement).
- A safe, playful way to build positive associations with food.
- A foundation for self-feeding and healthy eating habits down the road.
By their first birthday, solids will begin to take over as the primary source of nutrition. So this slow, supportive introduction sets the stage for that transition.
Signs of Readiness
Every baby develops on their own timeline, but here are some classic signs that your little one might be ready to try their first bites:
- Sitting upright with good head and neck control
- Showing interest in food—watching you eat, reaching for food or utensils
- Bringing food to their mouth
- Opening their mouth when food comes near
These cues often show up around the 6 month mark, but starting solids is not about age, it’s about what your baby can do. Always chat with your pediatrician to assess your baby’s readiness before starting.
Take It Slow and Make It Fun
Starting solids isn’t about a rigid plan or doing things “perfectly.” It’s about meeting your baby where they’re at, creating joyful and safe mealtime moments, and supporting their development at every step.
If you’re unsure about what foods to start with or how to introduce allergens, Jennifer walks families through this process at Little Eaters Academy.
